GURGAON: Gurgaon has come a long way when in comes to art scene with the best of art galleries and various exhibitions being organized in the city. However, National Awardee Bharti Dayal, who recently organized a three-day-long exhibition of traditionalMadhubani Art in the city, says the art scene has become more commercial in the city which is a bit unfortunate.
“Earlier the art lovers were stagnant to the Delhi region but Gurgaon seems to be fast emerging as the new art hub in the region, providing a platform and better market to several artists, however, it is a little unfortunate that some people are creating investment kind of work in art. One might have got M F Hussian paintings for lakhs of rupees but the value is not the same now so you can’t consider art is an investment,” said 51-year-old Bharti whose exhibition, the first in the city, opened on March 16 at the Ummami a world Cuisine restaurant at Gold Course Road.
Art lovers in the city got an opportunity to soothe their senses with traditional Madhubani art in a three-day-long exhibition by national awardee Bharti Dayal. Her paintings were on display at the Ummami, a world cuisine restaurant, on Golf Course road since Friday.
This exhibition, which opened on Friday, was Dayal’s first in Gurgaon. However, she was very happy with the enthusiastic response. “The city has great love for art as people kept contacting me through my website. This exhibition is an effort to reach out to them,” the 51-year-old artist said.
Her masterpiece, ‘Family’, depicts the life of Lord Shiva. It aims to emphasise the need of a family and how its reducing importance leads to stress. In most of her paintings, the colour red dominates.
“Red is the medium to warn people that it is high time that we understand the meaning of family, love, care and bonds. We are leaving all of it behind in the race towards westernization.”
Talking about the dying art form, Dayal feels the country needs institutes to groom young talent and the government should come forward to revive this art form. “I would love to groom young talent as it is our culture and tradition,” she added. Though Dayal has taken no professional training, she was brought up in Samastipur in northern Bihar, a region that was under the ancient kingdom of Mithila. So, Madhubani paintings were being painted daily on the walls of the house.” On Sunday, Dayal was also honoured with the Vashishath Bihari Samman amid festivities to commemorate 100 years of Bihar.
“Today, I feel I have achieved what I was longing for as people have started recognising the tradition art form.”
